498A

Indian Penal Code (IPC) 498A punishes a husband with imprisonment of up to three years and fine if her husband or husband’s relatives harass his wife.

A bench of Justices SANJAY KHANNA and SVN BHATTI, which heard the case under 498A of the Indian Penal Code, overturned the verdict of the Jharkhand court ordering Rohit (husband) to pay Rs 9,00,000 as compensation to the wife, before Rohit approached the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail. The Supreme Court has mentioned in the order that Rohit (husband) has agreed to increase the monthly maintenance cost to be paid to the wife from 4000 rupees to 10000 rupees.
